Seeker in cyberspace, welcome to this learning place!
(Astrologers who have their own astrology books for sale are invited to submit information on their books to be included in a future list of self-published Astrology books.)
My first Astrology book
was "Linda Goodman's Sun Signs". I was still a skeptic when I browsed this book at a friend's house, then bought a copy for myself. I was much less skeptical after reading all about my own sun sign! Then I bought Linda Goodman's next book, "Love Signs". Since the mid-80's many fine Astrology books have appeared which add psychological or spiritual insights to traditional horoscope interpretations - books I wish I could have read when I was starting on the endlessly fascinating journey of self-discovery that began around the time of my first "Saturn Return" at age 28-30.If you are just starting your journey to the stars, you now have a wonderful selection of astrological subjects and styles to choose from, in which so many fine astrologers and Astrology writers will share secrets of this ancient art. "When the student is ready, the teacher will appear." Many of these Astrology books were my "teachers", and you will naturally be drawn to the "teachers" who "speak to you" better than the others. I hope that you may find some of them here!

Michael Star's Astrology Book List (c)1997-2004
Astrology Basics for Beginners
HC=Hard Cover TPB=Trade Paperback PB=Paperback *=Recommended
[New students of Astrology will find "The Inner Sky" and "Choice Centered Astrology" easy to read and full of wise astrological insights. Both are recommended as a first introduction to the astrology of personality.]
- M.J. Abadie and Claudia Bader, "Love Planets", *
(New York NY: Simon and Schuster / Fireside Books, 1990) 334p TPB
[Explains the Sun, Moon, Venus, Mars and the Ascendant in detail (and has ephemeris tables for them), but not the other Planets. Gives a clear and interesting explanation of astrology basics and the Signs, and how they relate to each other. This is really a book on romance and relationships, but would be a fine introduction to astrology. Alas, it may now be out of print. Try the bargain book bins.]
- Evangeline Adams, "Astrology for Everyone",
(New York NY: Dell Publishing Co Ltd, 1931/71), 302p PB
[A classic Sun-Sign astrology book (which sold in 1971 for $1.25) by the favoured astrologer of the rich and famous, who went to court to defend the practice of Astrology, and won.]
- Donna Cunningham, "Moon Signs", **
(New York NY: Ballantine Books, 1988), 312p (plus tables) PB
[An excellent introduction and reference book regarding the Moon, including phases, transits, "emotional weather" and much more. Includes Moon Tables to 1999 so you can just look up your natal Moon Sign. Easy to read, interesting, and gives good advice. My advice: get this book!]

[Many details about the SIGNS, in point form and lists, including Males, Females, Children, Likes, Dislikes, Lovers, Friends, Work, Leisure, Health. A very thorough little astrology reference book you can carry in a purse and study in spare moments. Not just another pop Sun Sign book, it has a pretty "professional" attitude. Good for any beginner, worth a read by any astrology student.]

(Sebastopol CA: TIA Publications, div. of CRCS Inc., 1973), 64p TPB

- Joseph Goodavage, "Write Your Own Horoscope", *
(New York NY: The New American Library, 1968), 239p HC

- Linda Goodman, "Linda Goodman's Sun Signs", *
(New York NY: Taplinger, 1968) PB TPB
[My first astrology book, and the first astrology book to make the New York Times bestseller list. I pick up used copies for $2 and give them to my friends. Still in reprint as TPB. Linda's gone now, but her work lives on and helps keep astrology alive and growing.]
- Liz Greene, "Astrology for Lovers", ***
(York Beach ME: Samuel Weiser Inc., 1980/89), 357p TPB
[If you know your Sun Sign, you can experience this psychological analysis by a Jungian therapist. Not just for lovers...for a DEEP look into your psyche. Scary stuff! But something you need to understand about yourself, and understand about the other eleven Sun Signs. Anything by Liz Greene is excellent, including her "Mythical Tarot" book.]
- Grant Lewi, "Heaven Knows What", *

Michael Star's Astrology Book List
Relationships and Love
HC=Hard Cover TPB=Trade Paperback PB=Paperback *=Recommended
[Beginners will find SKYMATES and MADE IN HEAVEN easy to read and full of wise astrological insights. Both are recommended as a first introduction to the astrology of love relationships.]
It's a book on romance and relationships, but would also be a fine introduction to Astrology. Alas, it may now be out of print.]
- Stephen Arroyo, "Relationships and Life Cycles", **
(Sebastopol CA: CRCS Publications, 1979), 225p TPB
[Synastry: aspects, houses, also transits. Recommended for the serious student of Astrology.]
- Richard N. Beim, "Personal Relationships",
A Complete Astrological Guide
(New York NY: TOR / Tom Doherty Associates Inc., 1989), 368p TPB
[A guide to relationships between Sun Signs and each of the other Sun Signs as friends and lovers. Includes comments on male and female of each Sign. A bigger book than most of its type, but not much different in its approach.]
- M.E. Coleman, "Astro-Pick Your Perfect Partner",
(Wellingborough UK: Aquarian Press, 1986), 223p TPB
- Ronald Davison, "Synastry: **
Understanding Human Relationships Through Astrology",
(New York: ASI Publishers, 1977), 333p HC
[Synastry: the classic reference work.]
- Stephen Forrest and Jodie Forrest, "Skymates: ***
The Astrology of Love, Sex and Intimacy",
(New York: Bantam Books, 1989), 317p PB
[Synastry: an interesting, insightful approach to the Astrology of relationships. Buy it first and be fascinated by what this way of doing Astrology can reveal about your romantic relationship.]
- Carol Golder, "The Seductive Art of Astrology:
Meet Your Dream Lover Through the Stars",
(London UK: Judy Piatkus Limited, 1988), 190p TPB
- Linda Goodman, "Linda Goodman's Love Signs", *
(Ballantine Books / Harper and Row, 1982), 914p TPB
[I enjoyed this as a beginner, and I think it still does a good job of explaining the Sun Signs and their compatibilities in their 144 combinations. But please note that Sun-Sign compatibility is NOT the most important aspect of a good match - the Sun-Moon and Venus-Mars cross-aspects are better indicators of compatibility. You can marry your "worst" Sun-Sign match and find the contrasts in basic character are exciting and satisfying. Want a "rule of thumb" for a comfortably compatible "Sign"? "Marry your Moon Sign", I always say.]
- Amy Keehn, "Love and War Between the Sexes",
(Rocklin CA: Prima Publishing, 1997), 254p TPB
[Although it is not mentioned on the cover, the introduction to this book makes it clear that it is written for women, and offers advice on using Sun-Sign astrology to avoid dating and marrying the "wrong" man. Provides an extensive education on Elements and Qualities and Sun Signs, but may be better appreciated by women than men...]
- Michael Lutin, "Made in Heaven: ***
The Astrology of Relationships, Ideal and Real",
(New York: Ballantine Books / Random House, 1987) 293p PB
[A pop Sun Sign book; but interesting, insightful, deep. One of my favourite Astrology authors. I heard his lecture on the Tibetan Book of the Dead, and he kept the audience laughing!]
11 OCT 96: I have been informed by Michael Lutin that his book is now out of print. If you see one in a used book store, grab it while you can! It's shocking that Ballantine would discontinue such a good book after several successful re-printings, and shameful that the author cannot get copies of his own book to distribute at his own workshops.
- Joan McEvers, Editor, "Intimate Relationships: ***
The Astrology of Attraction",
(St. Paul MN: Llewellyn Publications, 1991), 237p TPB
[A collection of NEW original material by various modern astrology authors. Worth owning.]
- Michael R. Meyer, "The Astrology of Relationship: **
A Humanistic Approach to the Practice of Synastry",
(New York NY: Anchor Press / Doubleday, 1976), 263p TPB
[An oldie but a goodie. Includes Synastry, Contact Charts, Composite Charts, plus example charts for Sigmund Freud and Carl Jung, Frederic Chopin and George Sand, H.P. Blavatsky and Henry Olcott.]
- Wendy-Ann Paige, "Sextrology: The Lovers' Guide to the Stars", *
(London UK: Headline Book Publishing, 1994), 374p PB
[Sun Signs only.]
- Lynne Palmer, "Astrological Compatibility", **
(Tempe AZ: American Federation of Astrologers, 1976/86), TPB
[Synastry: a complete reference manual. Worth reading.]
- Carolyn Reynolds, "The Book of Lovers:
Men Who Excite Women, Women Who Excite Men",
(Saint Paul MN: Llewellyn Publications, 1992) TPB
- Frances Sakoian, Louis Acker, "The Astrology of Human Relationships: *
Techniques For Guiding Your Personal, Social and Business Relationships",
(New York: Harper and Row, 1987), PB/TPB
[Synastry: a complete reference manual in cookbook style. A handy reference for astrology students, and worth having in your personal library, but there are better interpretative texts.]
- Lois Haines Sargent, "How to Handle Your Human Relations", ***
(Tempe AZ: American Federation of Astrologers, 1958/88), 77p TPB
[An introduction to Synastry, the comparison of two horoscope charts by cross-aspects and placement of one person's planets in the other's houses. A short book, but long on useful insights! Buy this one.]
- Martin Shulman, "Karmic Relationships", **
(York Beach ME: Samuel Weiser Inc., 1984/88), 146p TPB
[A fine reference work on Synastry. Deals with cross-aspects only, with a karmic interpretation, but it may be the only book that gives separate interpretations for for male's planet to female's planet, and vice versa. Martin Shulman is "an original" with some unusual insights that make sense to me.]
- Martin Shulman, "Venus: The Gift of Love", **
(Miller Place NY: Golden Light Press, 1981), 149p TPB
[About planet Venus only, with original ideas!]
- Penny Thornton, "Synastry", **
Wellingborough UK: Aquarian Press, 1982), TPB
[A good introduction to Synastry and a fine reference book. May be out of print? I hope not!]
