Professional science demands an extreme degree of specialization of its practitioners; so much so that no company, nor even a government, can hope to maintain real in-house expertise relating to every issue that it may face. As a consulting company, Gadus Associates could maintain a large, though inadequately qualified, staff and could require them to become "instant experts" on whatever topics concern our clients. At Gadus, however, we believe that is the wrong approach. It may contribute to the profitability of the consulting sector but it does not encourage the delivery of high-quality scientific services.

Instead, Gadus Associates' full-time, in-house scientific capability is confined to the company's founder: Dr. Trevor Kenchington. When a client's needs demand additional expertise, Gadus operates by networking: assembling a team of professional specialists, each a true expert in his or her field, with their collective skills being matched to the needs of the project being undertaken. At the same time, we make our own abilities available within networks assembled by other companies or by our clients themselves. By deliberately cultivating links with other organizations, groups and individuals in the marine sector, we aim to join them all in a form of "virtual network", within which appropriate expertise of many kinds can be pulled together, quickly and efficiently, to undertake whatever tasks a client may require.

In assembling teams, Gadus draws particularly on the scientific and other resources available in Nova Scotia and the rest of Atlantic Canada. However, we maintain links with scientists in many parts of the world and we hope always to offer our clients access to an appropriate balance of world-class expertise and local understanding.

Within our growing "virtual network", Gadus Associates offers its clients simultaneously all of:

• An access point to the world-wide scientific and other resources of the network,
• Leadership and management of a team of consultants drawn from the network,
• Our own specialist capabilities as part of a team led by Gadus or by others,
• Direct services, when a client has its own team management resources or when only our own capabilities are required.
