An excerpt of the writing in Triad Moon: Brooke's reply was equally genuine. "The whole world is one." "A home with at least one more in the family." Helen's wry response increased Lila's sense of having committed a wrong. Of course. How would Helen respond to a statement which so obviously excluded her? The serenity which had characterized Lila's pleasure in the day was snuffed abruptly. The sun fell like a severed tree towards the horizon, bloody swirls of colour reflected in the darkening water. Distraught, Lila stumbled for the van, walking too fast for either of them to keep pace. Helen caught up with her, resting an arm on her shoulder. She said with quiet apology: "That was small of me. Sorry." At her elbow, Brook said gently, "Lila?" "What?" She smiled, disguising confusion with bravado. A crevasse seemed to be opening in the ground at Lila's feet, a hole into which she would have fallen if she were not cradled by two pairs of arms. Wind and shadows stirred across the sand, chilled them in their sweat as they huddled. With determined honesty, Lila whispered: "I've felt homeless in the world for so long. Now where Brook is feels like home... I don't mean to threaten you, Helen, but I've got to be able to tell her sometimes what she means to me..." With alarm, Helen said: "I want to be part of what you call home, Lila." "You are! Just what makes you fear that I've lost my love for you?" "I'm more worried about losing the daylight," Brook said, with uncustomary roughness. "Let's talk on the drive back to the site." "Can't you see that walking back in the dark is better than being left in the dark? You know, Brook, you talk about triads, but what happens when you get close to one?" Helen was not joking. There was nothing of the outrageous or the playful in her face. Lila started. "Triads! I don't -- this isn't -- ." Her tongue would not obey her. She could think of no words. The atmosphere was suddenly charged, electrical. "Helen, I don't understand you. Is this a game you're playing with us?" Brook sounded angry. "Of course she's playing," Lila stammered. "Aren't you, Helen? You/re quite right, though, Brook; let's head back." "Oh, forget it," Helen growled, and started running towards the van. "Even if I were willing to try, no one else would be." "To try what?" Lila spoke into empty air. Catching up with Helen, Brook spun her around. " Are you saying what I think you are? That you want to try loving both of us?" Circumventing Brook's shoulder, Helen spoke directly to Lila. " I know you love Brook. I want to know if you could physically grow to love me---" She started to cry. Lila felt as though some wedge had opened in the wall of time, bringing with it other-reality. Utopian fantasies were not intended to be lived. Acting on them would bring great danger. She braced to deny Helen's need. |
