Her novel The River Rat was one of five shortlisted by Mother Tongue Press in their search for the great B.C. novel in December 2009. Judge Jack Hodgins described the novel as filmic, with snappy dialogue which made him care for the characters, plot and theme of a socialite coming to terms with her sexual identity and issues of freedom, family and personal redemption.
Chase resides in Victoria, B.C. and is also a professional editor of magazines and newsletters.
Professional Achievements:
Triad Moon (Gynergy Books 1993): a novel of 187 pages about “past and present lives, incest and survival, healing and the astonishing strength of the heart”, as revealed through the lives of three independent women.
The Square Root of Female (Ragweed, 1984): a poetry volume of 54 pages
The Distress of Harvest (Fiddlehead, 1981): a poetry volume of 48 pages.Chase is the former editor of a quarterly newsletter for the BC Coalition to Eliminate Abuse of Seniors, called A Shared Concern. The newsletter can be viewed at http://bcceas.ca/section/news-issues/newsletter/.
Chase is currently seeking a publisher for Rogue States, a 317 page suspense/historical novel about the role of the IRA in world terrorism, which follows a female journalist, September Sullivan, into countries engaged in civil war. Sullivan is trying to resolve her guilt over the murder of her father by her ex-boyfriend and her own brother, during an assassination attempt upon former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher and her entire Conservative Caucus. Sullivan’s investigation leads to a connection between her IRA nemesis and plots on the part of Canadian subversives to bomb commercial airplanes and to smuggle illegal arms and persons through the under patrolled West Coast of Canada.
The River Rat is a romantic novel of 205 pages in length, about a woman who loses custody of her children when she leaves her husband, and how she deals with losing them. It is also about the abusive lesbian relationship with which the central character, Taylor, replaces her marriage; and her growing awareness of her own behavior as a root cause of her emotional upheaval.
Year of the Painted Snake is a 100 page poetry manuscript. The title derives from the fact that so often our fears are like painted snakes, which cannot cause us real harm unless we imagine the worst into existence. Year of the Painted Snake is about the death of friends, the end of relationships, and about life-threatening illnesses, all of which signal that change is afoot in our lives. We may choose to deal with change as an opportunity for transformation or resist making the changes which are required of us, but change will happen nonetheless and carry us into our destinies. Year of the Painted Snake is also about the darker sides of life and love, its ecstacy and pain. Hard lessons teach us to remodel ourselves.
Out of the Fire is the sequel to Triad Moon, which expresses a staunch belief of the power of love over evil.
