Limerick Moccassin Flower

On 12 May, 2001, I sat to paint a portrait of a Pink Ladyslipper (Moccassin Flower) and companions in the Red Pine woods of Limerick Forest near Bishops Mills, Ontario. The painting required two sittings - one to paint the close-up flower, and another a week later to complete the two more distant plants and balance the tones of the surrounding forest. I felt very personal, gazing into the face of this blossom, and the technical challenge of long, quick brush strokes necessary for the linear petals was exciting. This is a difficult, exhillarating painting, and the combination of intimate close-up view and landscape setting, although it feels entirely natural to my way of seeing and thinking, is a new accomplishment for me.
