Gnarly Dead Ironwood

On 21 May, 2001, along the National Capital Commission's "Jack Pine Trail" off Ottawa's Moody Drive, I met an old dead burly Ironwood tree leaning over the path through a Maple forest, and settled down beside the trail to paint it by early evening light. The painting is small, only 7 x 9 inches. As the sun leaves the tops of the trees a Gray Tree Frog calls a couple of times, then stops. A few hikers pass my paint box in the gathering dusk, and finally after two hours of steady work, I pack up and rise stiffly to return to the parkinglot with a finished painting. At 20:56 a few scattered Peepers and a full chorus of Tree Frogs sound from every direction.
